Seeing the All England Club’s manicured yards demonstrated power for Venus Williams as the various Grand Slam champion made a startling – and winning – return after close to 12 months off the court to play at Wimbledon on Friday.


The 42-year-old American, motivated by seeing more youthful sister Serena prior in the week, ventured back onto the court close by Jamie Murray in the blended copies thanks to a trump card section and speedily reserved a spot in the subsequent round.

“I had no arrangement to play. I saw the grass and I got energized,” Williams said after she and her British accomplice got a 6-3 6-7(7) 6-3 win over Alicja Rosolska and Michael Venus.

“I was at the French Open, it’s a wonderful occasion, yet my heart didn’t thump the same way. Not that I could play however … I had no plans. That is the reason I was asking (Murray) last moment.”
