The United States Tennis Association announced on Thursday that this year’s US Open will award a record $60.1 million in total player compensation. Each singles champion will receive $2.6 million, which is twice the amount that will be awarded to the runner-up.

The prior record of $57.5 million in prize money from the previous year has been surpassed, with an emphasis placed on increasing payments for players competing in earlier stages.

This results in an increase in prize money for each singles contender in the main draw to the tune of $81,000 for the first round and $80,000 for the second round.

Since 2016, these numbers show an increase of 85 and 57 percent, respectively.

Following discussions with both the WTA and ATP Player Councils, the USTA arrived at the aforementioned numbers.

In the qualifying rounds, there will be prizes of more than $6.25 million granted.
