Rafael Nadal won’t play in the group stage of the Davis Cup finals next month because he wasn’t named to the Spain team on Monday. Instead, Alexander Zverev will lead the German team.

This year, Nadal, who is 36, won the Australian Open and the French Open. He now has 22 Grand Slam singles titles, which is a record for men.

But he couldn’t play in his semi-final match against Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon because he hurt his stomach.

Nadal is getting ready for the US Open by playing in the Cincinnati Masters this week. However, he won’t play in the Davis Cup for the first time since Spain won it for the fifth time in 2019.

Spain will instead look to Carlos Alcaraz, a teen sensation, for ideas.

Sergi Bruguera’s team will play against Canada, Serbia, and South Korea in Group B, which runs from September 13 to 18 in Valencia.

In November, the top two teams from each of the four groups will move on to the knockout round in Malaga.

Zverev hasn’t played since he hurt his ankle badly against Nadal in the Roland Garros semi-finals in June.

The number two player in the world, though, will play at home in Hamburg against France, Belgium, and Australia in Group C.

Andy Murray will play for the 2015 winners, Britain, who will face Kazakhstan, the United States, and the Netherlands in Glasgow.
