After finishing the heats with a time of three minutes and 47 seconds, the Romanian teen, who is only 17 years old, was able to secure a spot in the final that would take place in Rome on Wednesday evening.

However, his name did not appear on the list of participants for the final, and Henrik Christiansen, a swimmer from Norway, took Popovici’s position in the competition.

Popovici, who had previously stated to reporters that he had only swum the 400-meter distance “three times in my life,” had already won the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle competitions at the Foro Italico in the capital city of Italy, breaking the world record on his way to winning gold in the shorter distance.

In June, Popovici made history when he became the first man in over half a century to complete the 100-200 metre freestyle double at the World Championships. Those victories were the latest in a string of successes for Popovici during a golden summer.

In his hometown of Bucharest, he also took home three trophies at the junior level of the European Championships. He is now preparing to travel to Lima, Peru, to take part in the junior world championships.
