The storied 35-year-old Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué has announced his retirement from the game when Spain’s La Liga breaks for the World Cup in Qatar later this month.

“Football has given me everything; Barcelona has given me everything. You cules [Barcelona fans] have given me everything, the Spaniard said on Thursday in a heartfelt social media post that included a montage of clips from his childhood.

In more than 600 appearances for Barcelona, Piqué has established himself as a key member of the team. He has won three Champions League crowns and eight La Liga championships.

The defender is a product of Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy, which has also produced players like Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta, and Xavi, the current manager of the team.

He left for Manchester United in 2004, where he won the Premier League and the Champions League, before going back to his original team in 2008.

During Pep Guardiola’s tenure at the club, Piqué would make 183 appearances, becoming one of the top defenders in the world.

In addition, he would solidify his position as a crucial player for Spain, leading them to 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship victories. He made his final appearance for the national team at the 2018 World Cup, his 100th overall.

Piqué is no longer a member of Barcelona’s starting lineup this season after the squad signed Jules Koundé and Marcos Alonso.

His recent performances have also drawn criticism, particularly during Barcelona’s 3-3 Champions League draw with Inter Milan.

Piqué, who voluntarily reduced his pay last year to help the team out financially, is anticipated to rejoin the team in a non-footballing role.

52 goals were scored by Piqué in 615 games for the team.

You know me, sooner or later, I will be back, Piqué hinted in his post. At Camp Nou, I’ll run into you. Barcelona, long live. Always.”

Piqué’s final game will be played on November 8 against Osasuna, according to Xavi.

He referred to Piqué as one of the game’s greatest defenders of all time.

“He has won it all,” he said. [He’s] among the best centre-backs in the history of football.”
