Iran stunned Wales by defeating them 2-0 in the eighth minute of stoppage time, scoring twice to give themselves a fresh start in the World Cup and leave their opponents facing a potentially decisive match against England.

Iran produced a spectacular finish after Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was dismissed in the 87th minute. Roozbeh Cheshmi drove home to give Iran the lead before Ramin Rezaeian scored second in the 11th minute of stoppage time.

Iran, who had to win to avoid elimination, was nearly unrecognisable from the team who fell 6-2 to England in their opening match. They were deserving winners even though they came from behind.

The woodwork denied Carlos Queiroz’s team twice in the second half at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, and they made the most of having an additional man after Hennessey was sent out for a terrible head-high lunge on Mehdi Taremi.

With England and the US playing later on Friday, Iran now has three points in Group B, two more than Wales, who were held to a 1-1 draw by the US in their opening match.

Next Tuesday, when Iran plays the US and Wales plays their old enemies, the group comes to a head.

The game picked up after the interval after a close first half.

Sardar Azmoun ran through only to hit the post, Ali Gholizadeh curled the follow-up against the other post, and Azmoun headed the rebound straight at Wales goalkeeper Hennessey to start the second half.

Hennessey once more came to Wales’s aid in the 70th minute when he used his fingertips to deflect Saeid Ezatolahi’s low drive from a distance around the post. However, he was then told to leave the field, setting up a tense conclusion.

Despite sprinting out of his area to get the ball, Taremi beat Hennessey to it. The goalkeeper then followed through and kneed Hennessey in the face.

A trip to the VAR monitor quickly followed the referee’s initial yellow card, and the subsequent red card seemed inescapable.

After Cheshmi delivered a gut-punching goal for Wales with a thunderbolt of a shot, Rezaeian finished off Rob Page’s team by delicately lifting the ball over the goalkeeper.
