DOHA: Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup semifinal between Argentina and Lionel Messi and Croatia matches South American flare against the cunning of Luka Modric and a great attitude of perseverance.
Reigning champions France and giant-killing Morocco, the first African team to ever make it to the World Cup final four, square off in the second semi-final on Wednesday.

Messi will attempt to lead his group to a second FIFA final in as many competitions. While France defeated Croatia to win the 2018 World Cup and take home the trophy in Russia, Croatia finished second.

Argentina lost to Germany in the 2014 finals by a razor-thin margin. The world-famous soccer player would be eager to emulate the late Diego Maradona and cap off an incredible career by eventually winning the World Cup.

After a nail-biting contest that required penalties, Argentina defeated Netherlands in the quarterfinal.

After both sides were still knotted at 2-2 after the full 90 minutes and the 30-minute overtime, the game was decided by a penalty shootout.

In a rare instance, the usually placid Messi was observed becoming enraged and yelling at Dutch players while he was being interviewed after the game.

In penalty shootouts, Croatia defeated pre-tournament favourites Brazil and Japan to go to the last four. Since finishing third at the 1998 World Cup, Croatia has not prevailed in a knockout game within regulation time at a major competition.

But four years ago, the European nation shocked the football world by making it to the championship game. But France ended their hopes by defeating them 4-2 in the championship game.

The best game in Croatian history, according to coach Zlatko Dalic, should be remembered for that nation’s history.

“To be among the four best national teams in back-to-back World Cups, that’s an extraordinary success for Croatia,” continued Dalic.

The defending champions France will play the first-ever African team to get to the FIFA World Cup final, Morocco, in the second semi-final.

Although France is the favourite to defeat Morocco and advance in their championship defence, Morocco’s exceedingly improbable dream run has garnered support from football fans throughout the world.

The fact that France served as Morocco’s colonial power and that tens of thousands of individuals with Moroccan ancestry reside and work there will add drama to the game.
