The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 17-16 by scoring 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. With 1:45 left in the fourth quarter and the Rams trailing by six points, Baker Mayfield, the new Rams quarterback, directed an eight-play, 98-yard drive. With only 10 seconds left, he connected with Van Jefferson for a 23-yard touchdown.

The Rams’ 98-yard TD drive was the longest game-winning TD drive to start in the last two minutes during the previous 45 seasons, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

The Raiders maintained tempo throughout the game, but Josh McDaniels’ team definitely let off in the second half. Josh Jacobs ran for 99 yards and a touchdown while Derek Carr finished with 137 passing yards and two interceptions. In addition, Davante Adams caught three passes for 71 yards while making several notable plays.

The Rams’ John Wolford started at quarterback, but Mayfield took over after just one drive. Ben Skowronek grabbed seven catches for 89 yards as the former No. 1 overall pick completed 22 of 35 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown.

In addition to adjusting to a new scheme and a short week, Mayfield had to cope with being released by the Carolina Panthers this week. Mayfield read the playbook on the aircraft to Los Angeles on Tuesday night after receiving it. and despite spending just one day with the team—Wednesday—he managed to develop the necessary rapport with his receivers to spearhead a 13-point comeback. Although Mayfield has only recently gotten used to the new time zone, it appears that he has settled into his new offence. By never allowing the Raiders to build a significant lead, the defence aided the offence. It always helps to win when a team has more passing yards, fewer turnovers, and less penalties than the opposition.

In addition to Skowronek, who led the team in receiving with 89 yards, and Cam Akers, who finished with 42 yards on the ground despite the run game not being as successful as the passing game, Mayfield received help from other players.

Although they played well in the early going, Las Vegas struggled to gain first downs and was never able to build a lead large enough to take control of the game. Compared to Mayfield’s 91.4 rating, Derek Carr finished with a rating of 36.9.

With a little more than four minutes left in the game and the Rams driving, the Raiders led by 13 points. The Rams offence had not yet scored a touchdown in the match, but when the Raiders relaxed, they created the opportunity for a comeback. Mayfield recognised his chance and seized it, returning with brisk play, precise passes, and assurance. The Raiders’ defence ran out of gas, and the game followed.

The Raiders appeared to be getting better, but they keep blowing leads, and it’s starting to look like a habit.
