Karim Benzema, a striker for France, announced his retirement from international football on his 35th birthday, the day after his country lost to Argentina in the World Cup final in Qatar.

The current Ballon d’Or winner and Real Madrid star Karim Benzema, who has scored 37 goals in 97 appearances for France, was injured in training one day prior to the start of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and was unable to participate.

“I’m proud of myself for putting in the effort and making the errors necessary to get where I am now. My tale is written, and ours is coming to an end “Benzema announced the end of his international career in a tweet on Monday.

Since Benzema is already 35 years old and unlikely to be selected for France’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America in four years, many would argue that it made sense for him to declare his retirement from international competition and concentrate on playing for his club.

However, Benzema has not been given a chance to serve on the national team in many years due to his alleged involvement in a scheme to utilise defamatory videos taken from his mobile device to blackmail a former colleague. The injury stopped him from leading his country’s campaign in Qatar, despite his recent return to the national team and prolific form for Real Madrid over the past couple of years.

In addition to playing at the World Cup in 2014 and the European Championship in 2008, Benzema made his debut for his country in 2007 and was left off the teams for the following two major tournaments due to the blackmail controversy.

He was summoned back for Euro 2020 last year, but he had little impact because Didier Deschamps’ team was eliminated early. In October 2021, he did assist France in winning the Nations League, and expectations were high for him in Qatar.
