Carlos Alcaraz is glad Novak Djokovic can play in 2023
Carlos Alcaraz, the number one player in the world, has expressed his excitement over Novak Djokovic’s comeback to the Australian Open next month, calling himself a “fortunate guy” to have such a talented opponent on tour.
Djokovic was not able to attend two of the four Grand Slam tournaments in 2022 (Melbourne and New York) due to his lack of Covid-19 vaccination, but he will be permitted entry to Australia for the 2023 tournament.
The 19-year-old Alcaraz capitalized on Djokovic’s absence, who was unable to defend his US Open title due to injury, and won his first Grand Slam tournament. He also became the youngest player to ever reach No. 1 on the ATP rankings.
The Spaniard has stated that he is pleased that Djokovic will be able to play at Melbourne Park, as he would love the opportunity to play against the 21-time major winner and Australian Open record holder.
Alcaraz told reporters in Abu Dhabi, where he will participate in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition event, that “tennis is better with the top players in the world, and for the spectators as well it’s fantastic to witness a tournament with the best players.”
“Personally, I hope Novak competes in every tournament he can. I’ve always maintained that the only way to truly prove oneself a world-class player is to defeat that guy. It’s a huge blessing to have Djokovic as a touring partner.”
A month after suffering an abdominal injury in a quarterfinal against Holger Rune at the Paris Masters and missing the ATP Finals and Davis Cup Finals in 2022, Alcaraz announced that he has “nearly 100 percent” recovered.
“At long last, I’m starting to feel okay. After a month of rest, my ab is nearly back to normal and I feel great. This past week, I’ve been training as usual, and it’s been doing me well “remarked the man from Murcia.
