At the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar, France, the defending champions, defeated Poland 3-1 on Sunday in their round of 16 match at the Al-Thumama Stadium.

Star forward Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the game to help France advance to face England in the quarterfinals. Mbappe moved to the top of the World Cup goal scorers list with five goals after scoring in the 74th and 91st minutes of the game.

Sol Campbell, a former England player, thinks Mbappe will have a good chance to win the Golden Boot at the FIFA World Cup 2022 if he maintains his current level of play against the Harry Kane-led team in the quarterfinal.

“He stands a very good chance of reaching the top if he continues in that direction. He scored a few goals and provided assists. So, he is substantially improving his game. However, if you give him that much room in front of the goal, he will really trouble the keeper and score two great goals “On the VISA Match Centre programme on Sports18, he said.

The 23-year-old Mbappe previously shared the top spot on the list of tournament goal scorers with Lionel Messi, Enner Valencia, Cody Gakpo, Marcus Rashford, Alvaro Morata, and fellow countryman Olivier Giroud with three goals each.

In the 44th minute, Mbappe assisted Giroud on his third goal against Poland before the latter scored a hat trick to surpass him. When France won the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Mbappe, who was 19 at the time, had four goals in his first appearance in a major international competition.

Robert Pires, a member of the 1998 France team that won the FIFA World Cup, believed that Robert Lewandowski’s late penalty was too little, too late because Poland couldn’t compete with Didier Deschamps’ team.

“We performed with discipline and seriousness. We had complete control of the match, and I believe we were superior to Poland.”
