Tennis player Alex de Minaur from Australia believes that representing his nation is the greatest honour possible as he prepares for the first United Cup.

The World No. 24 didn’t have to second guess signing up when he learned that the United Cup will be debuting this summer in Australia.

“To represent your country is the highest honour I can think of. It’s another chance, another chance to put everything I have into winning for Australia. I’ll make sure I’m all set up and prepared to go, “ATP cited Alex de Minaur’s statement.

During a practise session on Friday that Tony Roche oversaw, De Minaur got a sneak peek of the conditions at Ken Rosewall Arena.

For the round-robin stage of the mixed team competition, Australia has been placed in a strong Group D with Spain and Great Britain.

“Before the Australian Open, it will be terrific for us to put ourselves to the test and play some fantastic matches.

It will be difficult, but we enjoy being the underdogs. It’s our hope that we can support one another, encourage one another, and play some outstanding tennis to represent Australia “said De Minaur, who this season won a record-breaking 47 singles matches.

Australia excelled in team events in 2022, making it to both the Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup finals for the first time in nearly three decades. These outcomes, in De Minaur’s opinion, demonstrate that Australia is a United Cup contender.

“We have demonstrated our tenacity, the significance of representing Australia, and our pride in donning the green and gold.

Despite not having anyone in the top 20, we are still competing and have reached both the Billie Jean King Cup and the Davis Cup finals “he stated.

De Minaur is delighted that the Australian squad will be competing in Sydney, the location of his birth.

“Returning to Sydney and playing on the courts I grew up on is something I’m looking forward to. Playing in front of an Australian audience once more will be enjoyable “commented the 23-year-old.

“It will be wonderful to have the ability to represent our nation while we are living in Australia. Obviously, it would mean a lot if we could win and cause some damage, especially in front of our supporters at home “he added

De Minaur acknowledges that she has some anxiety about playing mixed doubles.

“That would most certainly be unfamiliar to me. On the court for mixed doubles, I might be making my debut. Who can say for sure if that will occur? Our team has a tonne of excellent options, so we’ll keep our opponents guessing right up to the last second, “said the Australian.

De Minaur is eager to work with Australia’s top-ranked women for the first time in a team setting, regardless of whether he is chosen to play mixed doubles or not.

“It ought to be a tonne of fun. All year long, Australians tend to keep together. We’ll have an even greater opportunity to support one another and show how close-knit our group is as a result of this. We will undoubtedly excel in the area of team chemistry because, in my opinion, that forms the bedrock for a team’s success “he stated.
