Shakib Al Hasan will probably only bat in the Dhaka Test because he couldn’t bowl after the first day in Chattogram. Head coach Russell Domingo said they’d struggle to find a good lineup with such changes, but that they’d be fine with Shakib at bat and as captain if it meant getting back into the series.

After Bangladesh lost the first Test, Domingo commented, “He could play as a hitter [alone].” He didn’t bowl enough overs, that’s for sure. His shoulder and [rib] bruises continue to cause him pain. This was a major setback, since we were reduced to only four bowlers.

“Ebadot Hossain also malfunctioned, leaving us with only three bowlers. As of right now, it is really challenging to maintain a stable side. Whether or not Shakib could bowl is something I cannot say with certainty. We have a problem with the fact that he is readily accessible to play as a hitter. An all-around player is required.

Shakib scored 84 runs in the second innings, but he was out trying to slog Kuldeep Yadav on the fifth morning as Bangladesh continued to lose wickets at the other end. Shakib’s hitting was a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing game for the home team, which lost by an innings and 188 runs.

Despite his “laid-back” persona, Domingo claims that Shakib has proven his hunger for success in Tests. Shakib’s absence from the field throughout stretches of India’s first innings prompted the question, but Domingo is confident that Shakib wants to keep playing Tests and so he will.

This is a very perplexing inquiry. That, he admitted, was a fair question. “He seems pretty chill, but when he’s in the competition, he really puts his all into it. On the surface, it may appear as though he doesn’t give a hoot. But I do know that he takes a great deal of pride in his appearances on stage. He would rather stay in the shadows than face public shame. The man is giving it his all in the competition.

Since Shakib is unlikely to bowl in the second Test, Bangladesh has brought in left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed as a replacement. Aside from concerns about Shakib’s health, though, the team also has issues with the bat.

After India scored 404 in their first innings, they were bowled out for 150, however they batted considerably better on the fourth day. However, losing wickets late in the game made it unlikely that they would reach their target of 513.
