On Tuesday, Morocco will play Spain, and Portugal will face Switzerland in the Round of 16. The World Cup in Qatar will feature the following four things.

1. Spain has not altered its plan In the most recent Group E match, the Japanese were able to break Spain’s rhythm and defeat them 2-1, but don’t anticipate any changes in strategy from the Spanish, who will stick to their passing game.

Spain should have more control than they did against the Japanese thanks to Ferran Torres, Aymeric Laporte, and Jordi Alba, but they lack a team that can drastically alter their style of play.

If any team in this World Cup has an identity, it’s the Spanish, and they won’t change after one defeat, despite Ansu Fati’s brief cameo suggesting he might have a bigger role to play.

2. Physical contact with Morocco Coach Walid Regragui will be optimistic about his team’s ability to pull off an upset because Morocco has seen how the Japanese were able to defeat Spain by withstanding pressure and then picking up the pace when it was necessary.

Spain struggles to convert possession into opportunities, despite scoring seven goals against Costa Rica, and Morocco has proven they are tough at the back with only one goal allowed throughout the competition and clean sheets against Belgium and Croatia.

Morocco has a combination that can cause Spain problems if their meek defence is combined with quick forwards like Hakim Ziyech, Youssef En-Nesyri, and Abde Ezzalzouli (the last two of whom play in Spain).

3. Should Ronaldo be dropped? There is a school of thought that believes Portugal coach Fernando Santos would do his team a favour (at least in terms of playing terms) by leaving Cristiano Ronaldo out of his starting 11 against Switzerland. Of course, this won’t happen because the consequences for the team would likely be too great.

Ronaldo’s main contribution to this World Cup has been to defeat Ghana and win a highly disputed penalty, and the rest of the time has been used to highlight how his 37 years are beginning to show. Simply put, he no longer has the mobility that made him so dangerous, and in an attack, he now cuts a static presence.
