Daniil Medvedev resumed his strong play on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Adelaide International 1 after a strong start to the 2023 season. He defeated World No. 7 Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-3.

In the semifinals, Denis Shapovalov of Canada, the seventh seed, or Serbia’s Novak Djokovic will square off against Medvedev.

Medvedev saved two break points from 15/40 in his opening service game and then reeled off four straight games from 2-3 to win the first set. He then faced a break early in the second set but remained composed. It took him five straight games to beat his fellow countryman easily in 78 minutes.

In Adelaide this week, where he advanced past Lorenzo Sonego and Miomir Kecmanovic in his first two rounds, Medvedev has yet to drop a set. When he faces either first seed Novak Djokovic or seventh seed Denis Shapovalov in the semifinals, he will look to advance closer to winning another trophy on hard courts, where 14 of his 15 tour-level victories have occurred.

“It’s been a long time.We haven’t played since 2019, that’s pretty long. Hopefully, we can play more matches at later stages of tournaments. It’s never easy, I’m happy that I managed to really raise my level, especially at the end of both sets, and I’m really happy to be through to the semis,” said Medvedev in his on-court interview.

The two men last spoke in Montreal three and a half years ago.

When Djokovic or Shapovalov were brought up as prospective semi-final opponents, he responded: “One of them probably has a lot tennis titles and enjoys playing in Australia. Although I believe he hasn’t lost in a while, I’m going to watch their battle.

You can never predict what will occur. Denis is such a powerful player, and even though he hasn’t yet defeated Novak, this moment will come one day because of how powerful he is.”
