Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup 3-1 over Real Madrid in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, their first trophy under coach Xavi Hernandez.

The Catalans produced one of their greatest displays in years against their fierce Clasico opponents, led by youngster Gavi, who scored himself and set up goals for Robert Lewandowski and Pedri Gonzalez.

Having achieved great success as a player at Barcelona, Xavi returned in November 2021, and this decisive triumph comes after a summer of considerable spending, indicating that his project is on the right track.

For Madrid, who have not played at their best since the World Cup break and who last weekend slipped three points behind Barcelona in La Liga, Karim Benzema scored a late consolation goal.

Los Blancos gave up the trophy they won last year to Barcelona, who have now won the Super Cup a record 14 times. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti experienced his first loss in a final since 2014.

Sergio Busquets, the captain of Barca, told Movistar, “We knew it was a chance we had to take. We have gone through a period of changes at the club and in the dressing room, and this will reinforce us to keep pushing for more titles.”

Xavi used four centre midfielders, with Gavi, 18, sliding inside from a nominal starting position on the left and repeatedly giving Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal the slip.

Barcelona broke the deadlock as Busquets pressed hard after a sloppy Antonio Rudiger pass, resulting in Lewandowski feeding Gavi, who confidently tapped home.

For the second goal, Gavi took advantage of De Jong’s pass and slid the ball over for Lewandowski to finish calmly.

“When you see him compete like that, putting his soul out there, he’s a character that is contagious for the team, he has an intrinsic potential for leadership,” Xavi said during a news conference.

“It’s wonderful because it emanates from within him. At 18, I’ve said it many times, but don’t let it go, this boy has no ceiling.”
