Muhammad Waseem, a UAE batsman, was the game’s outstanding performer, hitting 71 off 39 pitches to lead MI Emirates to a score of 204 for 5, the tournament’s first 200-plus total. MI Emirates launched their ILT20 campaign with a 49-run victory over Sharjah Warriors at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, despite Chris Woakes’ strong all-round effort.

Dwayne Bravo, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Imran Tahir then contributed to Sharjah being held to 155 for 9.

After Woakes bowled a calm over to Will Smeed, Waseem took the attack to Naveen-Ul-Haq, scoring 16 runs off the quick bowler’s over.

In the third over, Smeed skied a catch off Woakes for Rahmanullag Gurbaz, but Waseem and Fletcher saw them conclude the powerplay on a high note.

Although Woakes, who was by far Sharjah’s best bowler, returned to have Fletcher caught behind, it did little to counter MI Emirates’ impressive start.

Following an outstanding Abu Dhabi T10 competition, Nicholas Pooran joined Waseem in the middle and the two put on a partnership of 79 runs from just 40 deliveries.

Waseem frequently hammered the leg-side, scoring five fours and as many sixes. Finally, from Mohammad Nabi, he holed out to deep midwicket.

When medium pacer Junaid Siddique dismissed Pooran and Najibullah Zadran off consecutive balls in the 17th over, he appeared to have stopped MI Emirates’ momentum. However, Dwayne Bravo (21* off 10) ended the penultimate over with three straight fours, and he and captain Kieron Pollard (22* off 13) hit 17 off the final over to get them over 200.

MI Emirates made a strong start with the ball, as Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled successive deliveries in the second over to castle Evin Lewis and then trap Dawid Malan lbw.

In an effort to help Sharjah recover, Moeen Ali (15 off 16) and Gurbaz put up a 49-run partnership. However, once Moeen was caught at long-on off Bravo, the wickets began to fall at regular intervals.

Before Imran Tahir dismissed Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Joe Denly, and Mohammad Nabi in the space of 10 runs, Gurbaz was quickly bowled by Bravo for 43 off 31.

After that, Woakes made sure Sharjah scored a solid total by reaching his half-century in only 25 balls and ended with 62 off 29. Before Waseem took a screamer at long-on off the final delivery to conclude his innings, he scored 20 runs off the final over, bowled by Fletcher.
