Andy Murray, a former world number one, has been awarded a wild card for the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which will take place later this month.

The Scot defeated Fernando Verdasco in the championship match to claim the 2017 ATP Tour title.

Murray, who won a thrilling match against Matteo Berrettini in the first round of the Australian Open last month, wants to climb the rankings from his current spot of 61.

“Returning to Dubai brings back a lot of fantastic memories, not least the final with Fernando,” he stated on the tournament’s website.

“My form and game are improving, so the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships give another wonderful opportunity for me to continue climbing back up the rankings.”

Murray’s arduous efforts in Melbourne included his longest-ever match against Thanasi Kokkinakis, which ended at 4.05 a.m. before succumbing to Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round.
