Enzo Fernandez was acquired by Chelsea for a Premier League-record sum of 121 million euros, while Joao Cancelo unexpectedly joined Bayern Munich, and Jorginho joined Arsenal on a hectic European transfer deadline day.

In a desperate effort to bolster their squads for the remainder of the season, Premier League teams have once again outspent their competitors significantly.

A number of players, including Mykhaylo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke, and Joao Felix, who signed on loan from Atletico Madrid, were added by Graham Potter’s struggling Chelsea in January.

World Cup champion Fernandez is Chelsea’s sixth acquisition of the January transfer window. Benfica in Portugal announced Fernandez’s deal in the early hours of Wednesday.

The previous record, set by Manchester City in 2021 when it paid Aston Villa £100 million for Jack Grealish, has been surpassed by the current sum of £106.8 million.

For his performances during Argentina’s triumphant campaign in Qatar, Fernandez was voted Best Young Player of the World Cup. However, he only recently signed with Benfica in July of last year for an estimated sum of over £10 million.

It is believed that the 22-year-old signed an eight and a half-year contract that will expire in 2031.

Since purchasing Chelsea at the end of the previous season, Todd Boehly’s group has spent hundreds of millions of dollars, yet the team is still stuck in the bottom 10 of the Premier League.

Bayern Munich acquired Cancelo, a winger for Manchester City, on loan through the end of the current campaign with a buyout option for an estimated 70 million euros.

The 28-year-old Portuguese defender joined City from Juventus in 2019, but since the World Cup, he has only played a supporting role in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

“FC Bayern is a great club, one of the best in the world, and it´s enormous motivation for me to now play alongside these extraordinary players,” Cancelo said.

Jorginho, an Italian midfielder, was acquired by Premier League leaders Arsenal from Chelsea for a rumoured sum of $12 million.

I’m very enthusiastic for this new challenge and I just can’t wait to be on the pitch, said Jorginho to Arsenal.com after reportedly signing an 18-month contract at the Emirates Stadium.

“Everything has happened so fast. I was a bit surprised, but I took the opportunity of this amazing challenge.”

Leandro Trossard, a forward from Belgium, and Jakub Kiwior, a defender from Poland, were both acquired by the Gunners earlier this month as they sought to capture their first Premier League title since 2004.

Minutes before the deadline, Tottenham, a rival of Arsenal in north London, announced the acquisition of defender Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon.

The right-back has agreed to a loan deal that will last through the end of the campaign with the requirement that it become a permanent arrangement then.

Early on Wednesday morning, Manchester United made the loan signing of Marcel Sabitzer from Bayern Munich official.

Christian Eriksen’s ankle injury on Tuesday prompted United into deadline-day action and is expected to keep the Danish midfielder out until early May.

Earlier in the month, manager Erik ten Hag completed the loan signing of Dutch forward Wout Weghorst.

High-flying Harrison Ashby, a fullback for the Scotland Under-21 team, was acquired by Newcastle from West Ham as a follow-up to their acquisition of Anthony Gordon from Everton.

Illia Zabarnyi, a defender from Ukraine who played for Dynamo Kyiv, was acquired by relegation-threatened Bournemouth for a rumoured sum of roughly £24 million before Sassuolo and Ivory Coast midfielder Hamed Traore became their sixth addition of the month.

Nottingham Forest added Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and Atletico Madrid defender Felipe to their roster as part of the team’s dramatic revamp after winning promotion last season.

Keylor Navas, a goalkeeper for Paris Saint-Germain, was also borrowed by Forest for the duration of the campaign.

Ayoze Perez joined Real Betis for the remainder of the season, and Harry Souttar, an Australian defender, was acquired by Leicester from Stoke on a five-and-a-half-year contract.

Kamaldeen Sulemana, a forward from Ghana, joined Southampton from Rennes for a potential club record fee of £22 million.

Thorgan Hazard, a player for Belgium, has transferred from Borussia Dortmund to Dutch club PSV Eindhoven on loan.
