The MLS club announced on Thursday that FC Cincinnati has signed Colombian defender Santiago Arias through the 2023 season with an option to extend by an additional year.

The 31-year-old, who most recently represented Atletico Madrid on loan to Spanish second-tier team Granada, has joined Cincinnati on a free transfer, according to MLS.

“Santi brings an enormous amount of experience and ability to FC Cincinnati,” Cincinnati General Manager Chris Albright said. “His defensive instincts, character, and overall quality is a welcome addition to the group.”

After spending five years at PSV Eindhoven, where he won three league championships and two Dutch Super Cups, Arias joined Atletico in 2018. Then, he contributed to Atleti’s 2018 UEFA Super Cup victory.

With more than 50 appearances under his belt, Arias was a member of the Colombian team that placed third at the Copa America Centenario and qualified for both the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.
