Shubman Gill, a top-order batsman for India, was named the ICC’s Men’s Player of the Month for January 2023 in recognition of his recent efforts in various formats.

Following his impressive performance in the white-ball cricket match in January, Gill was nominated for the trophy alongside his teammate Mohammad Siraj and Devon Conway of New Zealand.

After a great ODI season in 2022 and a successful Test tour of Bangladesh in December, when he scored his first century, Gill was rewarded with his first T20I cap during the three-match home series against Sri Lanka in 2022.

After that, he scored 207 runs in three ODI innings against the island nation, including 70 and 116 runs in the first and third games, respectively.

The 23-year-best old’s effort came in the first ODI in a three-match series against New Zealand, where he hit 208 off 149 to aid India in posting a winning score of 349-8 in a suspenseful encounter in Hyderabad.

He became the fifth Indian to register an ODI double-hundred with his outstanding performance, after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma (twice), and Ishan Kishan.

Additionally, Gill’s 360 against the Kiwis tied Babar Azam’s mark of 360 against the West Indies in 2016–17 for the joint-highest total by anyone in a three-match bilateral ODI series.

Gill was outstanding in the third game against the Black Caps, smashing 126* off just 63 deliveries, after struggling in the first two T20Is against them.

With the century, he became the sixth Indian batsman to achieve a hundred in each of the three international formats, joining Tendulkar, Rohit, Suresh Raina, and Virat Kohli.
