La Liga investigating racist abuse of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr

During his team’s 1-0 loss to Real Mallorca on Sunday, Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior was subjected to racial taunts, and La Liga is looking into the issue.

Vinicius was verbally referred to as a “monkey” by one supporter, as heard in a video.

“Once again intolerable racist insults were observed against Real Madrid player Vinicius Jr,” said the Spanish top flight in a statement Monday.

“(La Liga are) working with the home club to identify those responsible, with the aim of taking the appropriate legal measures.”

Prior to Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey match against Atletico Madrid in January, a Vinicius effigy was hung from a bridge in front of the club’s training facility. Spanish authorities are currently looking into this incident.

In September 2022, Vinicius was the target of racist chants from Atletico fans, but Madrid prosecutors decided not to file any accusations.

In December, Vinicius criticised La Liga for continuing to “do nothing” about racism at Spanish matches after receiving insults during a victory at Real Valladolid.

“Racists keep going to games and watching the greatest club in the world up close and La Liga continues to do nothing,” Vinicius said.

“I will carry on with my head held high and celebrating my victories and those of Madrid.”

Vinicius was fouled ten times during the game against Mallorca, making him the player with the most fouls this season in the top five leagues in Europe.

“I think everything that is happening and has happened is not Vini´s fault, Vini just wants to play football, and beyond that, there´s an atmosphere of provocation. They foul him, that is what is happening,” said Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti on Monday.

Before the racist remarks became public, the coach was talking about the tension that surrounded Vinicius during the game.

“Everyone thinks that it is Vini´s fault but we have to look at the game, look at what happened today with him.”
