LeBron James comes close to breaking Abdul-Jabbar’s record
Los Angeles Clippers defeat Los Angeles Lakers 133-115. LeBron James comes close...
LeBron James has surpassed Kareem Abdul-39-year-old Jabbar’s record to become the NBA’s all-time top scorer.
James, a 38-year-old standout for the Los Angeles Lakers, scored 38 points in a 133-130 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder to break Abdul-previous Jabbar’s record of 38,387.
Eight months before James was born, in April 1984, Abdul-Jabbar first broke the scoring mark.
“It means so lot to me to be in the presence of a legend and great like Kareem,” James added.
At the conclusion of the third quarter, James, who needed 36 points to break the record, accomplished it with a fadeaway jumper, giving him a career total of 38,390 points.
While Abdul-Jabbar, 75, who was there at the game on the Lakers’ home court, stood and cheered, an emotional James raised both arms in delight.
A ceremony to celebrate the accomplishment was held during a brief break in play, and James took the podium to speak on the court.
“I want to thank everyone who has been a part of this journey with me over the last 20 years because I wouldn’t be who I am without you. You were all extremely helpful. Your dedication and sacrifices aided me in reaching this stage, “He stated.
“And thank you so much to the NBA, Adam Silver, and the late great David Stern for enabling me to be a part of something I’ve always wanted to do. In a million years, I would never have imagined this could be even greater than it is now.”
In front of a cheering throng that included tennis great John McEnroe, musicians Jay-Z, LL Cool J, and Bad Bunny, boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., actor Denzel Washington, and music icon Jay-Z, Abdul-Jabbar ceremoniously turned the ball over to James to acknowledge his new record.
