Nick Kyrgios seeks assault dismissal due to mental health: reports
Tennis player Nick Kyrgios will seek to have the assault case dismissed...
Tennis pro Nick Kyrgios appeared in court in Canberra on Friday to argue that an assault allegation against him should be dropped because of his mental health.
The Wimbledon champion entered the courthouse with crutches and a knee brace after sustaining a “gruesome” injury that kept him out of the Australian Open last month.
Kyrgios appeared at the hearing escorted by his mother Norlaila and his partner at the moment, interior designer Costeen Hatzi.
On his way inside the building, the 27-year-old Kyrgios, who is presently ranked 20th in the world, avoided speaking to the media.
Although specifics of the event, which is said to have occurred in December 2021, have not been released, an Australian national broadcaster has stated that his ex-girlfriend was involved.
According to prior statements made by Kyrgios’ attorneys, he will attempt to have the single count of common assault removed due to mental health issues.
As Kyrgios prepared to compete in the Japan Open, the case was postponed in October so experts could create mental health studies for the court.
“There’s only so much I can control and I’m taking all the steps and dealing with that off the court,” Kyrgios said from Tokyo at the time.
Kyrgios, a Canberra native known for his erratic play and on-court antics, has opened up in public about his struggles with depression and the demands of his international tennis celebrity.
