Shakib Al Hasan and newcomer Towhid Hridoy both nearly missed centuries as Bangladesh beat Ireland by 183 runs in the inaugural one-day international in Sylhet on Saturday.

After the foreigners put them in to bat, Shakib scored 93 and Towhid added 92 to lead Bangladesh to their highest-ever ODI score of 338-8.

To bowl out Ireland for 155 runs in just under 31 overs, left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed contributed 3-42 and Ebadot Hossain led the reply with 4-42.

“We batted quite well. For the first 20 overs, it wasn’t the easiest wicket to bat on. “But Shakib was amazing, and Towhid was also impressive,” captain Tamim Iqbal remarked after the game, according to Cricbuzz.

George Dockrell was the final man to be disqualified after scoring 45 points, Ireland’s highest total.

Stephen Doheny and Paul Stirling put up 60 runs in the first stand, but after Shakib struck Doheny for 34, Ireland fell to 5-76 and never recovered.

“Around the midway mark, we weren’t too unhappy since the wicket was superb and the optimum time to bat was under lights,” Ireland skipper Andrew Balbirnie said.

“But, we kept losing wickets and unable to form partnerships.”

Graham Hume finished with a career-high 4-60, but the hosts held off an early Irish bowling attack.

As Tamim (3), Litton Das (26) and Najmul Hossain (25) all went for low scores, Shakib and Towhid combined 135 for the fourth wicket to raise Bangladesh from 81-3.

After Tamim, he became the second Bangladeshi cricketer to surpass 7,000 ODI runs.

Shakib is also only the third player after Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya and Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi to reach 300 one-day wickets and 300 one-day runs.

After completing his third successive ODI fifty, he changed gears, hitting Harry Tector for five fours in an over.

After chasing a wide yorker from Hume to get the bottom edge, he came seven runs short of his tenth ODI century.

Towhid played Bangladesh’s highest ODI debut innings, sharing 80 runs for the fifth wicket with Mushfiqur Rahim, who hit 44 off 26 balls.

Hume dismissed both batters in the same over before dismissing Taskin Ahmed, but the tourists were unable to stem the flow of runs.

The final two One-Day Internationals will be contested in Sylhet on Monday and Thursday.

Ireland last visited Bangladesh for a bilateral series in 2008 and will play three Twenty20 internationals and one Test match during their tour.
