Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos’ contract negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have been put on hold because of worries they will receive new Champions League sanctions for additional Financial Fair Play (FFP) violations.

UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations for the 2020–21 season were broken by 10 clubs, PSG being one of them. They paid a €10 million fine and had another €45 million suspended pending future accounts, with additional penalties possible.

With losses of €370 million in their most recent set of accounts, PSG has been posting record losses recently. Messi and Ramos are two of their highest-paid players, and with both out of contract this summer, the club will have to make difficult financial decisions.

The French club might be barred from adding any new players to their European squad for the upcoming season, and their registered squad size for European competition might be reduced from 25 to 23 as potential penalties.

According to Diario AS, there is also a remote possibility that the club could be permanently banned from participating in European competition. The 2024–25 season would be the earliest that could occur as a result of sustained losses during that time period; consequently, their wage budget would need to be drastically reduced in the interim.

Messi was the highest-paid player in the world before the club locked down Kylian Mbappe to a new three-year contract extension last summer. During his first year in Paris, the Argentine earned a salary of £25.5 million (€30 million), but for the second and final year of his two-year contract in Paris, he received a salary of £34 million (€40 million). According to some estimates, Messi has earned more than €1,000 million in his career than any other player.
