Erik ten Hag‘s improving team received a harsh wake-up call after Manchester United’s humiliating 7-0 thrashing by Liverpool, but the manager has urged his team to recover this week.

Just one week after taking home their first trophy in six years, Jurgen Klopp’s resurgent team defeated United on Sunday, putting them to the sword as Liverpool pounded in six goals in the second half at Anfield.

With confidence after only one loss in 22 games and still high from defeating Newcastle to win the League Cup at Wembley, Ten Hag’s team arrived at the home of their biggest rivals.

As they pursued success on four fronts, their impressive run also included a historic victory against Barcelona in the Europa League.

But after the joint-heaviest loss in the illustrious history of the 20-time English champions, they left Anfield with their tails between their legs.

As a result of the humiliation, talk of a possible quadruple is put to rest. Third-placed United is now 14 points behind leaders Arsenal and far behind second-placed Manchester City.

Ten Hag was scathing in his assessment of his team, accusing the players of a “unprofessional” and “unacceptable” performance.

Despite clear signs of improvement this season, the dismal performance demonstrates how much work the Dutchman still has to do to rebuild a club that hasn’t won the Premier League since 2013.

This season, United had already suffered the humiliating losses of 4-0 at Brentford and 6-3 at Manchester City.

Ten Hag urged his team to use the Anfield debacle as motivation for the rest of the season, beginning with Thursday’s Europa League last-16 first leg at home to Real Betis.

“We’ve seen in the past that we can recover — after Brentford, after Manchester City,” he told the BBC.

“This is a significant setback that must be addressed. I’m extremely disappointed and enraged about it.

“It’s a wake-up call. We must face this head on.”
