Pep Guardiola issued a warning despite Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle on Saturday, pointing out that Newcastle will continue to pose a threat to City’s ability to retain the Premier League title.

The defending champions, who were absolved at the Etihad by a string of egregious errors from the visitors, scored thanks to goals from Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva.

In order to avoid forcing Ederson into a save, Sean Longstaff, Callum Wilson, and Joelinton all contributed to Newcastle’s latest setback to their hopes of finishing in the top four.

Newcastle’s first full season under Saudi ownership, which held so much promise, is starting to lose its lustre.

When Manchester United defeated Eddie Howe’s team in the League Cup final last weekend, the club was denied its first major trophy in 54 years.

A winless run of eight league games since December 26 has also left them four points behind Tottenham in the race for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Guardiola, on the other hand, was impressed by the way Newcastle imposed themselves on his side for long periods and sees parallels in City’s rise following an Abu Dhabi-backed takeover 15 years ago.

City needed four years to win their first title in Abu Dhabi, but they have now won six in the last 11 seasons.

“This team and this club will be a title contender in the coming years,” Guardiola predicted. “The club’s ambition is palpable. Because the takeover was only last season, they are there in a short period of time. They will be there if they begin to rise and rise and rise.”

City had glimpses of their best form in recent weeks, but it took two moments of brilliance to salvage a crucial three points from a disjointed performance.

Following the World Cup, Foden struggled with form and fitness, but the England international has looked more like his old self in the last week.

On 15 minutes, the 22-year-old skipped past four Newcastle challenges to score his fourth goal in three games, thanks to a deflection off Sven Botman.

Longstaff should have responded almost immediately, but he waited too long, allowing Nathan Ake to make a brilliant last-ditch block.

Wilson’s barren run explains Newcastle’s goalless streak of eight games, and he then failed to connect with Kieran Trippier’s cross.

Howe’s triple substitution early in the second half nearly had the desired effect, with Newcastle pinning City inside their own half.

Joe Willock, one of the substitutes, broke down the right and his low cross begged for the finishing touch by Joelinton, who instead missed his kick.

Another of the substitutions, Alexander Isak, had a penalty appeal turned down after being wiped out by Ederson after Ruben Dias blocked the Swede’s initial effort.

“We were competitive, we had chances, but Manchester City took them,” Howe said.

“I believe that we will resume scoring in the long run.”

Guardiola replaced De Bruyne with Silva in an attempt to stop Newcastle’s flow through the City midfield.

With the goal that calmed City’s nerves, the Portuguese made an immediate impact.

On the edge of the box, Haaland passed the ball to Silva, who shot low past Pope with almost his first touch.
