Roy Hodgson, a former manager of England, has been given another season as the head coach of Crystal Palace.

After a 12-match losing streak in all competitions, Patrick Vieira, who succeeded Hodgson at Selhurst Park in July 2021, was fired by Palace on Friday.

When Watford was demoted to the Championship in May 2022, Hodgson, 75, stepped down as manager.

“It is an honour to be asked to return to the club that has always meant so much to me,” Hodgson said.

“Our single goal now is to start winning games and accumulating the points required to keep our Premier League status.”

Following his resignation from Watford, Hodgson had stated he did not anticipate accepting a new managerial position in the Premier League.

In addition, Paddy McCarthy, who served as interim manager during Sunday’s 4-1 loss at Arsenal, has been named assistant manager at Palace, replacing Ray Lewington as first-team coach.

“I am delighted to welcome Roy and Ray back to the club,” Palace chairman Steve Parish said.

“We are obviously in a difficult position, but we hope that Roy’s and Ray’s experience, understanding of the club and players, coupled with Paddy, can help us meet the immediate demand of staying in the league.”

Following their loss at the Emirates Stadium, Palace are currently 12th in the Premier League and are only three points above the drop zone.

On April 1, Hodgson’s second stint as manager will begin with a home game against Leicester.

Throughout the course of his more than 45-year management career, he has held managerial positions at Inter Milan, Blackburn, Fulham, Liverpool, West Brom, and Palace. He has also served as the head coach of the Swiss, United Arab Emirates, and Finnish national teams.

Hodgson holds the record for being the competition’s oldest manager after overseeing 382 games while managing six clubs in the Premier League.

Hodgson oversaw England from 2012 to 2016, although they did not advance from their World Cup group in 2014, and Hodgson stepped down following a shocking 2-1 loss to Iceland in the Euro 2016 round of 16.

He received a CBE in May 2022 in recognition of his contributions to football.
