“Bad umpiring” led to Pakistan’s defeat against South Africa, says Harbhajan, Irfan
Former Indian cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan believe that Pakistan’s match against South Africa in the ICC World Cup 2023 was lost due to an incorrect umpiring call.
Proteas defeated Pakistan by a slender margin of one wicket in Chennai. If Tabraiz Shamsi had been declared out by the on-field umpire, the Men in Green might have won the match.
With eight balls remaining in the 46th over, Tabraiz Shamsi was hit by Haris Rauf’s delivery, which pitched on a length and created a significant space between his bat and pad.
Pakistan chose to refer a case through the Decision Review System (DRS). When the ball monitoring system was activated, it was discovered that, despite the ball having pitched outside off and only barely brushing the leg stump, the impact was in line with the stumps. Thanks to Keshav Maharaj’s vital intervention, the on-field umpire’s ruling was upheld, enabling the batter to survive and lead South Africa to their fifth victory.
Former Indian spinner Harbhajan stated that Pakistan would have prevailed if the rule had not been against them, and hence the ICC should modify it.
“Bad umpiring and bad rules cost Pakistan this game. ICC should change this rule, if the ball is hitting the stump that’s out whether the umpire gave out or not out doesn’t matter.. otherwise what is the use of technology?” Harbhajan posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Meanwhile, Irfan Pathan was of the opinion that Proteas had luck on two occasions. “Two calls went against team Pakistan. Wide and LBW. Looks like South Africa got some Luck with a solid game this World Cup.”

Graeme Smith, a former captain of South Africa, stayed Harbhajan, nevertheless, and the identical “umpires call” that went against South Africa also disqualified Rassie Van van Dussen.
“Bhajji, I feel the same as you on the umpires call, but Rassie and South Africa can have the same feeling?” Smith wrote.

With a stunning 2.032 net run rate (NRR) following the pivotal victory, the Proteas moved to the top of the points table.
While Temba Bavuma and his team encountered some difficulties in their pursuit of 271, Aiden Markram’s outstanding hit of 91 brought them dangerously near to the finish line.
Pakistan’s pace attack played a brilliant cameo in the latter stages of the match, taking Pakistan to within a wicket off 11 runs. However, Keshav Maharaj remained composed and stood until the very end, eventually making the winning shot to seal the deal for the Proteas.
