In his analysis of the differences between the current and past Pakistani teams, former England captain Nasser Hussain spoke on Tuesday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India, before the Green Shirts take on Bangladesh in a crucial ICC World Cup 2023 encounter.
For the first time in World Cup history, Pakistan has lost four straight games. Their prospects of qualifying are now slim to none at all because, even if they win their remaining games, their fate would depend on the performances of other countries, particularly New Zealand.
When asked what separated the Pakistani teams of the past and present, Hussain said that their bowling assault was the primary distinction.
“At this World Cup, Pakistan’s bowling in particular has just not been able to keep scores down. The two run-chases from South Africa and Afghanistan – previous Pakistan sides would have defended both of those totals in those conditions,” Hussain said.
It should be mentioned that Pakistan lost by eight wickets and one wicket, respectively, despite scoring 282 and 270 runs against Afghanistan and South Africa. Hussain thought that the prior sides would have protected this objective, but the Green Shirts were unable to do so.
Pakistan set a 223-run aim in the 2015 World Cup, which was easily won by the overwhelming favorites, South Africa, who had maybe the strongest white-ball team of this generation. South Africa defended the target.
Due to DLS intervention, the target was changed to 232 runs, and after Pakistan scored just 202 runs, they dismissed the whole Proteas team, which included hitters like Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis, Rilee Rossouw, AD de Villiers, and others.
Shahid Afridi-led Pakistan, on the other hand, defended a number of low totals at the 2011 World Cup, notably 184 against Canada after Canada had eliminated the whole team for just 138 runs.
Pakistan also bowled out the whole Australian team for just 176 runs during the 2011 World Cup. Despite having players such as Shane Watson, Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussy, Michael Clarke, and others, none of them could withstand the lethal bowling onslaught of Pakistan.
