In a one-sided contest at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Australia secured their record-extending sixth ICC World Cup title by defeating India by six wickets. Travis Head emerged as the hero for the Aussies, delivering a remarkable century despite losing three early wickets.

Head’s outstanding performance saw him scoring 137 runs off 120 balls, with 15 fours and four sixes, as he dominated the Indian bowlers across all parts of the ground. Marnus Labuschagne played a crucial supporting role, forming a formidable 192-run partnership with Head.

Opting to bat first, India faced an early setback when Mitchell Starc dismissed star opener Shubman Gill for just four runs in the fifth over. However, Rohit Sharma showcased his prowess, scoring crucial runs during the powerplay. Unfortunately, he fell short of a half-century in the 10th over, becoming Glenn Maxwell’s victim, with Travis Head taking an exceptional catch.

Shreyas Iyer’s dismissal for four runs and Rohit Sharma’s departure left India at 81-3 in 10.2 overs. Despite a 67-run partnership between KL Rahul and Virat Kohli, Cummins claimed Kohli’s wicket just after he completed his half-century. With wickets falling at regular intervals, India managed to post a total of 240 runs in 50 overs, with six players failing to reach double digits.

Chasing the target, Australia’s Head and Labuschagne’s partnership guided them to victory, clinching their sixth World Cup title. The win establishes Australia as the most successful team in World Cup history, with at least four more titles than West Indies and India, who have two each.

Australia’s dominant performance in the final showcased their cricketing prowess, while India faced their first and most costly defeat in the World Cup, with several key players failing to contribute significantly to the team’s total.

The ICC World Cup 2023 final will be remembered for Travis Head’s exceptional century and Australia’s commanding display, reaffirming their status as a cricketing powerhouse on the world stage.
