Pakistan is still in the running to make it to the big event’s semi-final after defeating New Zealand by 21 runs (DLS method) in the 35th match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, India on Saturday.
Even with the victory, Pakistan’s route to the World Cup semifinal is still challenging because they are still reliant on the outcomes of Afghanistan and New Zealand.
As much as the Men in Green need Pakistan to defeat England on November 11 in Kolkata and hope that Sri Lanka performs well against the Black Caps on November 9 in Bengaluru, they also need Afghanistan to lose one of their final two games, ideally against South Africa or Australia. This is because the Afghans have the same number of points (8) as Babar Azam’s team despite playing one fewer game.
Ideally, Pakistan will benefit from these results if they wish to advance to the semi-final.
India will finish first with 18 points, followed by South Africa with 14 points if all the results match the scenario outlined above. Pakistan, with 10 points, will finish fourth and advance to the World Cup knockout stage, while Australia, with the same number of points as the Proteas, will finish third.
