Glenn Maxwell’s remarkable performance in the 2023 World Cup took center stage as he played one of the greatest innings in the tournament’s history. The 35-year-old Australian cricketer delivered an astonishing unbeaten double century, guiding his team to a thrilling three-wicket victory over Afghanistan at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on a memorable Tuesday.

Maxwell’s heroics came in a match filled with dramatic twists and turns. Australia found themselves in dire straits at 49-4 after Josh Inglis was dismissed for a golden duck. However, Maxwell stepped up to the challenge, showcasing his destructive batting prowess. He terrorized Afghanistan’s bowlers, pummeling them all over the park and giving them no respite. The right-handed batter was dropped twice, first by Hashmatullah Shahidi and then by Mujeeb ur Rehman, which proved costly for Afghanistan.

Captain Pat Cummins played a vital supporting role, adopting a calm and sensible approach, accumulating 12 runs off 68 balls. Maxwell’s stunning innings took a toll on his body as he suffered from cramps towards the end. Despite his physical limitations, he continued to play shots without using proper footwork.

Notably, Glenn Maxwell made history by becoming the first batter ever to score a double century in a One Day International (ODI) chase. He also achieved the distinction of being the first player to score two centuries in a single World Cup edition while batting at No. 5 or lower in the batting order.

In the first innings, Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran emerged as the standout performer, becoming the first Afghan batter to score a century in the history of the World Cup. While other Afghan batsmen failed to make substantial contributions, Zadran opened the innings and anchored his team’s efforts, guiding them to a competitive total.

Rashid Khan played a crucial supporting role during the final five overs, contributing a rapid 35 runs off just 18 deliveries, featuring two fours and three sixes. Rahmat Shah, skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, and Azmatullah Omarzai also made significant contributions to Afghanistan’s cause.

In terms of Australia’s bowling, Josh Hazlewood stood out as he met the expectations, conceding only 39 runs in his nine overs and claiming two important wickets.

Looking ahead, Afghanistan will face a crucial must-win match against South Africa on November 9, while Australia will take on Bangladesh in their final group match on November 11. Glenn Maxwell’s historic innings will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most extraordinary moments in the history of the World Cup, setting a new standard for ODI chases.
