South Africa defeated Afghanistan by five wickets in the 42nd match of the ICC World Cup 2023 on Friday, ending their group-stage campaign on a high note. This was the Proteas’ seventh win in the tournament, which helped them finish second in the World Cup points table with 14 points.

India, South Africa, and Australia have already booked their places in the mega event’s semi-final, and as of now, two teams—New Zealand and Pakistan—are fighting for the one vacant position.

However, Pakistan’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup semi-final are nearly impossible. They would have to beat England by 287 runs if they bat first, or dismiss England for 50 runs and chase the target in two overs or 100 runs in three overs if they bowl first.

England need a win against Pakistan to ensure their qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy, so one of the two sides is bound to lose something on Saturday.

The remaining World Cup matches are scheduled as follows:

  • November 11: Australia vs Bangladesh @ Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune.

  • November 16: Semi-final 2 — Second place vs third place @ Eden Gardens, Kolkata
