In the lead-up to the second Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the Pakistan team management is grappling with a challenging decision regarding the selection of the wicketkeeper.

Concerns have arisen regarding the form and fitness of former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, adding complexity to the decision-making process.

Sarfaraz Ahmed’s recent performance in the Perth Test, where he managed to score only 3 and 4 runs, has raised doubts about his suitability for the role. In a two-day match before the Melbourne Test, he played innings of 35 and 10 runs, but the team management remains uncertain about his contribution.

Contrastingly, wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan showcased his batting prowess with an impressive 60-run inning in the first innings of a two-day match. This has prompted discussions within the team management, with a reluctance to consider Sarfaraz solely as a wicketkeeper and Rizwan as a batter.

If Muhammad Rizwan gets the nod for the Melbourne Test, there is speculation that Sarfaraz Ahmed might be excluded from the playing XI, intensifying the selection dilemma for the team management.

The challenges for Pakistan extend beyond the wicketkeeper selection, as the bowling department faces setbacks. Spinner Noman Ali has been ruled out of the series due to acute appendicitis, and Mohammad Nawaz has been named as his replacement. Pacer Khurram Shazad, who made his debut in the Perth Test, is also unavailable due to a stress fracture in his left 10th rib and an abdominal muscle tear.

Moreover, mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed, who complained of discomfort in his right leg during the practice match against PM XI, will not participate in the Melbourne Test. Off-spinner Sajid Khan, called up as Abrar’s replacement before the first Test, is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming match.

The confirmed squad for the second Test includes Shan Masood (captain), Sarfaraz Ahmed, Imam-ul-Haq, Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam, Saud Shakeel, Salman Ali Agha, Faheem Ashraf, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Aamir Jamal, Sajid Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Hasan Ali, and Mir Hamza. The team faces a formidable challenge as they seek to overcome the selection dilemmas and put up a competitive performance at the MCG starting on December 26.
