Before the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, the Pakistani cricket team was dealt a serious blow: all-rounder and vice captain Shadab Khan is expected to miss the tour because of a foot injury.

After suffering a foot injury during the most recent National T20 Cup, 25-year-old Shadab has been sidelined.

It is quite improbable that he will play in the forthcoming five-match Twenty20 International series, and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will start searching for the 25-year-old’s successor soon.

On December 25, the PCB plans to reveal the team for the trip of New Zealand.

In the upcoming days, Wahab Riaz, Kamran Akmal, Asad Shafiq, and Iftikhar Anjum, the PCB selection committee, will convene. The National T20 Cup’s top players will also be taken into consideration.

Recall that the three-match Test series between Pakistan and Australia is part of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023–25 cycle, which ends on January 7.

Pakistan’s first Twenty20 International (T20I) match against New Zealand is set for January 12, just five days after the Test series ends.

The PCB appointed Shaheen Shah Afridi as the skipper of the shorter format after skipper Babar Azam resigned as the captain of all formats.

Shaheen, who is regarded as one of the best bowlers in the world, particularly with the new ball, will face the 2021 T20 World Cup runners-up in his maiden captain’s role.
