Tottenham announced on Wednesday that it had signed England goalkeeper Fraser Forster on a free transfer from Premier League rivals Southampton.

When his Saints contract expires on July 1, Forster will join Spurs on a two-year agreement.

He is likely to serve as Hugo Lloris’ backup at Spurs and could be utilized primarily in local cup events, given the club has qualified for the Champions League next season.

In eight years with Southampton, the 34-year-old Forster made 162 appearances, including 24 in all competitions last year.

He has earned six England caps, most recently in March.

Forster participated in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2016 European Championship for England.

After loan stints with several English football clubs and two season-long stays with the Glasgow giants, he completed a permanent move to Celtic in 2012 after two season-long stays.

Two years later, he joined Southampton and, after losing his starting position on the south coast, returned to Celtic Park for the 2019/20 season before regaining the favor of Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl.
