  • Artturi Lehkonen’s overtime score helped the Avalanche advance to the Final.
  • No Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup since 1993.

In the NHL playoffs on Monday, Artturi Lehkonen scored 79 seconds into overtime as the Colorado Avalanche defeated Edmonton Oilers 6-5 to advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

In the best-of-seven Western Conference final, Colorado swept the host Oilers 4-0 to advance to the championship series for the first time since 2001.

The Avalanche will compete for the Stanley Cup against either the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning or the New York Rangers. The Rangers hold a 2-1 advantage in the Eastern Conference final.

Since the 1993 Montreal Canadiens, no Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup, the longest such drought in NHL history.

Colorado will attempt to win its third Stanley Cup, having previously won in 1996.

Left wing Lehkonen scored the game-winning goal by redirecting a shot by defenseman Cale Makar past Oilers goaltender Mike Smith.

“Cale took the shot. I just deflected it,” Lehkonen said. “It landed straight on my blade. I had an empty net in front of me.”

The Avalanche overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period and briefly took the lead before needing overtime to defeat the stubborn Oilers.

“It was a great comeback win for sure,” Lehkonen said. “We were talking in the second intermission that we just had to find our game and we could pull through this.”
