Tuesday’s 4-1 victory by the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightening over the New York Rangers evened the NHL Eastern Conference final series.

Pat Maroon scored in the opening minutes of the first period, and Nikita Kucherov scored in the second period to double the Lightning’s lead.

In the third period, Steven Stamkos scored three goals to effectively end the game and tie the best-of-seven series at 2-2.

New York’s Artemi Panarin scored a late consolation goal on the penalty play before Tampa Bay’s Ondrej Palat scored the fourth goal into an empty net.

After only 2:38 of the first period, Tampa Bay took the lead when Zach Bogosian picked up the puck on the right side and cut in on goal.

Bogosian’s shot was blocked by Igor Shesterkin of the Rangers, but Maroon tapped in the rebound to make the score 1-0.

At the end of the second period, Russian winger Kucherov scored a goal past Rangers goaltender Shesterkin after receiving a precise feed from Lightning center Palat.


Stamkos secured the victory with a close-range goal in the third period, after Palat’s excellent effort down the right side.

There was still time for Panarin to score New York’s consolation goal, but Palat scored into an empty net to make the score 4-1.

Thursday’s fifth game of the series takes place in New York.

In the Stanley Cup final, the Eastern Conference champion will meet the Colorado Avalanche.

Colorado completed a 4-0 series sweep against the Edmonton Oilers on Monday to go to the Stanley Cup.
