Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany responded to the club’s critics on Tuesday, after the league winners were hit with over 100 claims involving Premier League financial regulations.
City has been accused of crimes that allegedly occurred between 2009 and 2018, and if proven guilty, they might face fines or even expulsion from the Premier League.
During his 11-year tenure at the Etihad Stadium, Kompany, who is currently the manager of Championship-leading Burnley, won four Premier League championships and six domestic cups.
The 36-year-old Belgian has strong emotional ties to City and, though he declined to address the accusations directly, he said it was unfair for outsiders to criticize his former team.
“I kind of look at it and sometimes roll my eyes a little bit,” Kompany said after Burnley’s FA Cup win over Ipswich, when asked if the financial charges will tarnish recollections of what he achieved at City.
“No question there’s a lot of righteousness in the world to come and tell you what you’ve done wrong, and then if everybody looks at themselves, I think the football industry in general is not one that can afford to point the finger too many times.
“I think all of you will have a little bit of a smile on your face to know what the football industry is about. When people start pointing fingers, I become very skeptical.
“Do your best for yourself, and let’s try to better all the time, but I’m a little sceptical when fingers are easily pointed.”
