Whatsapp claims itself as a secure messaging application with end-to-end encryption protecting your communication even when backed up. The protection only applies to the messages that are backed up in your device. When you move your whatsapp backup to google drive, it warns you that end-to-end- encryption no longer applies.

According to WA Beta info

“WhatsApp is now focusing on security features, like the possibility to protect your backup hosted on Google Drive! The feature is in an alpha stage of development, so what we’re showing now is very poor but it’s enough to understand what its purpose is. Basically, the feature allows you to encrypt your backup with a password, so you’re sure that nobody (neither WhatsApp nor Google) will be able to see its content.”

This new feature is still in the development phase and may take time until we see its officially rolled out for masses just like the dark mode of whatsapp.

Once the encrypted backups are available, you’ll be able to turn them on via WhatsApp’s Settings -> Chat -> Chat backup. A new Password protected backups entry will show up there, under Google Drive settings.
