Pitaka’s latest cover is for those who desire MagSafe-style convenient charging for their iPad Mini. When used with the supplied pad, the new $79 MagEZ Case Pro for the sixth-generation iPad Mini (called the iPad Mini 6) includes magnetic points on the rear that carry power through the iPad’s USB-C connection. You can also use it with the $129 MagEZ Charging Stand, which raises the tablet and has a second Qi charging area for a phone or headphones in its base.

There are various drawbacks to this strategy. Pitaka’s case doesn’t make use of the iPad Mini’s built-in magnets, and it also limits access to the USB-C connector, leaving you with just the magnetic pad to charge the tablet. While the case is on, forget about sending any data via a wired connection.

The case is made of rigid rubber with a carbon fiber-like weave pattern that should shield the phone from most common drops but isn’t the most durable I’ve seen. Because it doesn’t cover the screen like Apple’s folio covers, you’ll probably want to use a screen protector with it.

On the good side, the cover allows charging of the Apple Pencil on the right side, and there’s a little attachment that captures the Pencil and holds it in place better when you toss the iPad in a bag.

Aside from those drawbacks, the MagEZ definitely lives up to its name, since charging is as simple as placing the case near the base and letting the magnets do their work. The iPad will be held securely in either landscape or portrait mode thanks to the strong magnetic attraction. (The stand tilts as well, but there is no height adjustment.)

Pitaka advises at least a 45W USB-C Power Delivery brick if you wish to charge the iPad and a phone at full speed at the same time on the stand, which neither the case nor the stand come with. (With iPhones, the base enables 7.5W charging and up to 15W charging with other Qi devices.)

To make this configuration viable, you must be completely dedicated to magnetic charging, as neither the case nor the stand are inexpensive. If it isn’t a deal breaker, both accessories should be available starting today, May 30th.
