Synopsis
Elon Musk sparked outrage online on Thursday when he tweeted Colin Wright's political cartoon.
Colin Wright, the creator of the political cartoon, is now selling his sketch as a non-fungible token (NFT) and has launched bidding on the OpenSea digital marketplace. Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently tweeted a cartoon graphic implying that his political stance has evolved to the right over the years.
Mr. Wright, a contributing editor for the online culture commentary blog Quillette, remarked on Twitter, “The auction for the #NFT of my political cartoon that @elonmusk shared (230K retweets, 1.3M likes) is currently at 1.25 $ETH! There are 13 days left to bid, so don’t miss your chance to own a bit of internet history!”

Mr. Musk sparked outrage on Thursday when he tweeted Mr. Wright’s caricature. The drawing shows a stick figure labeled “me” standing slightly left of center on the political spectrum in 2008, only to become a right-leaning conservative in 2021.
It appears to reflect Mr. Musk’s conviction that the left-wing of American politics, rather than the right-wing, has swung to the extreme since 2008. The cartoon implies that people who held centrist views in 2008 have shifted to the right as a result of this shift.
The SpaceX and Tesla CEO commented on his political viewpoint in the following tweets. “The far left hates everyone, themselves included!” he tweeted saying. Mr. Musk, on the other hand, stated in another article that he is not a fan of the far-right.
The far left hates everyone, themselves included!

But I’m no fan of the far right either.
Let’s have less hate and more love.

Returning to Mr. Wright’s political doodle, the NFT auction is not the creator’s sole attempt to monetize the cartoon. Mr. Wright tweeted an Etsy ad for a mug displaying the design in a tweet thanking Mr. Musk for his post.
Hi @elonmusk! Thank you for sharing my cartoon! If anyone wants to buy the mug, it's available in my store! https://t.co/Ei0ojZCW8F

In a separate tweet, he stated that he “really loved the discussion it has kindled”. He went on to say that the cartoon expresses a universal reality. “Of course, politics are more complex than can be captured in a political cartoon with stick figures,” he added.
As of now, the NFT bid is 1.25 Ether.
