Li Auto Inc. and Hozon New Energy Automobile Co. of China are the first clients of a new long-range battery that Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. revealed Thursday and aims to mass produce in 2023.

CATL, the world’s biggest EV battery maker, says the “Qilin” battery can go 620 miles on a single charge and boasts 255 watt-hours per kilogramme. It’s 13% more powerful than Tesla’s.

Any major manufacturer’s battery has the most range. CATL is under pressure to innovate and maintain its leadership as BYD Co., LG Energy Solution Ltd., and Panasonic Holdings Corp. produce their own products.

Li Auto’s founder and chairman, Li Xiang, unveiled CATL’s Qilin on Weibo.

Kia Motors will also make use of CATL’s help. Friday, CATL signed contracts with three vendors.

A spokesman for Kia said that the company is working with its suppliers to “diversify and stabilize battery supply.”
