FIFA approves semi-automated offside for 2022 World Cup

FIFA will utilize semi-automated offside technology at this year’s World Cup, promising more precise and faster decisions.

With the help of technology, contentious offside calls will be decided with a speed and accuracy unimaginable ten years ago.

FIFA stated the technology will cut down on Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions on marginal offside rulings and reduce the time needed to check.

“We have been working on a more consistent use of VAR, in particular concerning the line of intervention,” said Pierluigi Collina

“We are aware that sometimes the length of checks or reviews is too long, in particular, concerning offside.”

FIFA’s response is the so-called SAOT, which will lend a futuristic, space age air to the game by using 3D animation to explain VAR judgments on a stadium’s large screen.

In the past seven months, the technology has been evaluated at two competitions. and it was anticipated that it would be approved for use at the World Cup. which will take place in Qatar from November 21 to December 18. It will be utilized at each and every tournament location.

It does this by utilising 12 specialised tracking cameras that are placed under the roof of the stadium. This allows it to follow the ball and each player’s position at a rate of 50 times per second. The 29 data points cover all relevant limbs and extremities, including those that are relevant.

A sensor in the ball delivers data 500 times per second, allowing perfect offside detection.
