Apple seizes smartphone sales crown from Samsung
Apple was the top smartphone seller in the final quarter of last...
Smartphone sales fell again in May after the pandemic in 2020. This is the second time in 10 years that sales have fallen below 100 million.
Counterpoint Research says that smartphone sales dipped to 96 million in May. This is a 4 percent reduction compared to April and 10 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Take a look at the graph below.
The 96 million is the second straight monthly fall and there are a variety of reasons why. Although supply chain concerns have eased, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the prolonged recession in China are hampering growth in phone sales. Inflationary pressure around the world is also contributing.
There’s also the reality that China is still under COVID lockdowns. Smartphone manufacturing are either fully shut down or are working at half capacity. This has produced production challenges for numerous Apple suppliers, which may result in a delay in iPhone 14’s introduction, but none of these reports have been proven yet.
The iPhone 14 lineup is scheduled to appear in October alongside the new iPads. All other smartphone launches appear to be on pace. Multiple significant launches are scheduled for this month, and there appears to be no reason for them to be delayed.
