YouTube has detailed additional measures it plans to implement to start cracking down on identity abuse.
YouTube artists begin publicly airing their grievances about the platform, you know something serious has happened. That’s what happened a few months ago, when prominent YouTubers began discussing the widespread problems that lead to comment and identity abuse. Thankfully, it appears that the company is ready to address the issue, having detailed additional measures it plans to implement to start cracking down on the matter.
On July 29, creators on YouTube will no longer be able to conceal their subscriber numbers in a move that could prove to be the platform’s most significant update to yet. Those looking to identify imposters will benefit greatly from this, but authentic channels will be made public. Despite the fact that broadcasting one’s subscriber count is inoffensive, there are channels that obfuscate their numbers. This is a regular problem for smaller accounts who are just starting off.
New and improved controls for comment moderation are coming to YouTube Studio. You can’t just use any old random characters for your channel name on Youtube; there are restrictions in place. YouTube isn’t being quite clear, but they do say that you can’t have your characters impersonate real people or companies. To put it another way, this effectively prevents the usage of any characters with unique meaning.
Though the recent alterations will undoubtedly prove to be a beneficial initial step, it is possible that this is just the beginning of a protracted and relentless struggle. We anticipate that this will improve the platform for both creators and viewers. It has pledged to revise its policies and keep an eye on the issue in case the current strategy doesn’t pan out.
