Jeff Blackburn, Amazon’s media chief, will retire in 2023

Jeff Blackburn, Amazon’s senior media officer, plans to retire at the start of 2023, the e-commerce giant announced on Friday.

The media and entertainment companies, which have been led by Blackburn since May of last year, will be overseen by two current executives, Mike Hopkins and Steve Boom, who will report directly to Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy, according to the company.

Prime Video, Amazon Studios, Music, Audible, Games, and Twitch are among the firms.

Blackburn joined Amazon in 1998 as a senior vice president and directed the firm through its initial public offering prospectus at Deutsche Bank.

He briefly departed Amazon in February 2021 before returning in May 2021.

“I’ve decided to spend 2023 differently, giving more time to family, and feel strongly this is the right decision for me,” Blackburn added.

According to Amazon, Blackburn has been a crucial factor in the success of shows like Rings of Power as well as the acquisition of movie company MGM this year.

Meanwhile, Amazon had enormous layoffs in November of this year, which are now expected to continue into next year, according to CEO Andy Jassy. Layoffs have been announced to employees in the company’s electronics and books businesses. A voluntary buyout offer was also made to select employees.

Amazon has already announced that it will lay off approximately 260 corporate workers across the state. Amazon is offering severance compensation to workers who are laid off. It is one of many tech companies experiencing major layoffs this year. In November, Meta and Twitter both announced employment layoffs, firing off thousands of employees.
