Apple temporarily halted development of its own Wi-Fi chip
Apple is fighting to reduce its dependency on third-party vendors by bringing component manufacturing in-house.
Cupertino is expected to bring wireless processors, 5G modems, and even display manufacturing in-house for its iPhones, Apple Watches, and Macs, just like it did with its A-series mobile chipsets and M-series SoCs.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo’s recent semiconductor survey, Apple will abandon its Wi-Fi chip development and continue to rely on Broadcom as its primary supplier.
Apple is spending the majority of its IC design resources on chip development. According to Kuo, Apple is still putting its 5G modem development ahead of the Wi-Fi chip effort.
Apple is expected to include Wi-Fi 6E in its future iPhone 15 models as well as the rest of its product portfolio.
Apple’s hybrid Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, according to Kuo, is still in the works. Mark Gurman also stated that Apple is still developing a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combination chip.
